How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Documents assembled from pieces — merged scans, combined reports — end up with no page numbers, or worse, three competing sequences from the source files. One clean sequence stamped after assembly fixes navigation, citation and printing in one pass.

Open the page-number tool

Step by step

  1. Assemble your document first (merge, reorder, delete) — numbering should be the last edit.
  2. Open the page-number tool and choose the file.
  3. Pick position (bottom-centre is the safe default), style (1, 2, 3 · Page 1 · 1 of 12), and the starting number.
  4. Tick 'skip first page' if there's a cover.
  5. Number, download, and spot-check a middle page.

Tips that save a retry

  • '1 of 12' style helps recipients notice missing pages — good for legal and compliance sends.
  • Starting at a number other than 1 keeps chapter files consistent with a master document.
  • If page content crowds the bottom margin, top corners usually have more room.

Questions

Can I remove existing page numbers?

Not directly — they're part of the page content. Add your new sequence in a different position, or crop the old margin if it's consistent.
